The Dog Listener A Review by Melissa
Bryson The Dog Listener is an excellent book for anyone whose dog has behavioural or emotional problems or who wish to prevent such problems from occurring. Inspired by Monty Roberts (author of The Horse Whisperer) and based on her insight into the instinctive language of dogs and other members of the canine family, Jan Fennel has developed a method for training dogs called Amichien Bonding. This method, which is an alternative to the traditional enforcement method of obedience training, shows owners how to use the language of dogs to illicit a willing response rather than one out of fear or pain. Fennel illustrates the success of this very simple method throughout the book by relating personal experiences both with her own dogs as well as with those of others. Whether a dog is exhibiting behavioural problems, such as biting, jumping up or nervous aggression or emotional problems, such as separation anxiety, fear of loud noises or timidity, Fennel shows how her method can be used to address these problems resulting in a happier dog and owner. She also shows how this method can be used to help rescue dogs and puppies to adapt to their new home. As a resource, this book is an invaluable addition to any dog owner’s library. The Other End of

Review by: Laura Simmermon According to the back cover, “An Applied Animal Behaviorist and dog
trainer with more than twenty years’ experience, Dr. Patricia McConnell
reveals a revolutionary, new perspective on our relationship with dogs –
sharing insights on how “man’s best friend” might interpret our
behaviour, as well as essential advice on how to interact with our
four-legged friends in ways that bring out the best in them.” I really enjoyed reading this book and was amazed at how much I learned
from it, especially when I started to evaluate just how I attempt to
communicate with my greyhounds. I have now put into practice many of
the concepts and ideas that Dr. McConnell raises within her book and I
hope that my dogs better understand the message that I am trying to send.
At least I now think about how they may interpret what I am trying to
communicate, and I look at things from their perspective. The book is filled with an enormous amount of information, filled with relevant examples gleaned from the author’s experiences with her own dogs and those of her clients. The author is delightfully witty, and the book is very easy to read. This is one book that I would categorize as a “must have” for people serious about learning how to deal and communicate with their canines. The Dog’s Mind /
Understanding Your Dog’s Behavior
A Review by: Laura Simmermon All brains are not alike, and Bruce Fogle’s book explains the ways in which a dog’s brain works and why dogs perceive, understand and learn things so differently from humans. Although this started off as a more “technical” book that I found a little difficult to get into, it was well-worth the perseverance. I felt that the book provided some incredible insight on what may or may not motivate a dog as well as explaining instinctive canine behaviour. Although more “scientific” than some dog books that I have read, the author’s wry sense of humour and obvious depth of knowledge contributed to the excellence of this book. I would highly recommend The Dog’s Mind to any dog owner that wants to better understand how their canine thinks and why. The Social Lives

Review by: Laura Simmermon Although a trained Anthropologist, Elizabeth Marshall Thomas writes this book from the perspective of a dog owner and animal lover. This book is filled with observations and anecdotes drawn from Thomas’ experiences with her multi-animal ménage. Although I don’t necessarily agree with some of Thomas’ animal ownership practices, I enjoyed this book immensely and felt that Thomas came across as a meticulous observer, sharing her insights into animal behaviour and the social workings of her pack. |
